Rambo (from the First Blood and Rambo movies) is one of 8 characters that can currently be played in Fight Klub - a new tradeable card game by Decipher.

This hero can’t be taken down very easily. Not as sturdy as others, he has an 7 life (how many hits it takes to hill him), 5 hand (how many cards he draws up to) and 1 hold (how many cards he keeps during the cooldown phase).

Rambo is characterized by the very attributes he represents - Loyalty, Guerilla Tactics, and (of course) Fearlessness. These are the attributes that power his fighting skills.

His game text is a nod to his toughness. Whether or not he is down or out, he knows how to get out of a scrape. His game text models that. It reads:

Score (burn a green resource, discard 3 cards): If opponent won this fight, opponent exhausts fight card instead of scoring it. You may play this action only ince per turn.

So in other words, Rambo can nullify an opponents win, narrowly escaping a lost fight. No wonder he’s into his 4th movie.

Villian Profile: Jigsaw

Jigsaw (from the Saw movie series) is one of 8 characters that can currently be played in Fight Klub - a new tradeable card game by Decipher.

Jigsaw is clearly one of the trickiest villians to cross the screen and probably this game, as is noted in his game text. He is sturdier than most thanks to an 8 life (how many hits it takes to hill him), 5 hand (how many cards he draws up to) and 0 hold (how many cards he keeps during the cooldown phase). But what’s interesting is that he is also very versatile. With a 0 Hold, he is going to be geared toward cycling his deck faster than most.

Jigsaw is characterized by the very attributes he represents - Judgment, cancerous motivation, and (of course) Morbidity. These are the attributes that power his fighting skills.

His game text is a nod to his trickery. As jigsaw is known for always gaining the advantage at the expense of his opponents, so is his game plat. His game text models that. It reads:

Enhance (burn a yellow and green resource, spot 2 identical fight cards): Choose one of the spotted fight cards. If it is unresolved, score it immediately.

So in other words, Jigsaw can score fight cards without ever having to resolve the actual fight. With decks tuned to carry multiple copies of good fight cards, Jigsaw could easily rack up a ton of wins this way.

Nasty.

Hero Profile: Ash Williams

Ash Williams (from the movie Army of Darkness) is one of 8 characters that can currently be played in Fight Klub - a new trad-able card game by Decipher.

This hero is clearly a resourceful guy given his play style. He is sturdier than most thanks to an 8 life (how many hits it takes to hill him), 6 hand (how many cards he draws up to) and 1 hold (how many cards he keeps during the cooldown phase).

Ash is characterized by the very attributes he represents - Fortitude, S-Mart Pride, and (of course) Insanity. These are the attributes that power his fighting skills.

His game text is a nod to his S-Mart enthusiasm. Whether or not its a shotgun or a chainsaw for a hand, he knows when to pull out the right weapons. His game text models that. It reads:

Setup (burn a yellow resource, discard 1 card): If opponent had no support cards in play, search draw stack for a condition or gear and reveal it, then play it for free.

So in other words, Ash won’t be wanting for gear or conditions when the opponent is on the ropes. Clearly, Ash is always ready to brandish his “boom-stick.”

A Successful Seattle Fight Klub Meetup

On Saturday, March 7th, we had our first meetup for the Seattle Underground. only a couple of people showed up but we had a great time learning the game.

I brought along 4 decks the event. The two starter decks - Rambo and Hannibal Lecter; and two decks I cobbled together (rather poorly) using my remaining cards - Michael Emerson and Ash Williams. The winner. HANINIBAL LECTER.

The Rambo deck lost every game. The problem lied with deck construction. Rambo is a physcial deck, but half of his cards don’t play on that effect. If I were to construct the deck, I’d have all physical fight cards in the deck. Perhaps I missed the point. I’m sure Decipher knows that their doing when they threw the deck together.

The Ash Willliams deck also did poorly. The reason is because I did a lousy job of putting together the deck. What the heck was I thinking.

The Michael Emerson deck was very powerful. I did a much better job tuning it to his strengths. The only problem is that I ignored the hero/villain restrictions which made the deck that much more powerful.

The Hannibal Lecter deck was nicely tuned. Hannibal is a physical/mental hero and the deck was tuned accordingly. The mental fight cards were nicely boosted by the +2 skirmish bonus resident on the character card. The physical fight cards are nice because he has a special ability that doubles the damage. Therefore he’s a winner in my book.

We plan to do these meetups every couple of weeks. Please look here for more meeting invites over time.

A couple of Seattle players, get the fight started.

A couple of Seattle players, get the fight started.

Card game setup in action

Card game setup in action

“It puts the lotion on its skin” helped Hannibal...

“It puts the lotion on its skin” helped Hannibal Lecter rack up 4 damage points.

Villian Profile: Hannibal Lecter

Hannibal Lecter (from the...

Villian Profile: Hannibal Lecter

Hannibal Lecter (from the movie Silence of the Lambs) is one of 5 characters that can be played in Fight Klub - a new tradable card game by Decipher.

On first glance he’s quite an unassuming character. His attributes are similar to others I’ve seen in the game with a 7 life (how many hits it takes to hill him), 6 hand (how many cards he draws up to) and 1 hold (how many cards he keeps during the cooldown phase).

Hannibal is characterized by the very attributes that defined him in the movies. His power comes from his charm, surgical precision, and of course culinary skill. These are the attributes that power his fighting skills.

His game text is a nod to his truly brutal nature. Any one who has seen the movies knows that when he kills, he does so in a painful, torturous and brutal fashion. His game text models that. It reads:

Score (burn 3): If you have The Drop and you won this fight with a physical fight card, that fight card scores double damage.

So in a fight Hannibal Lecter wins, he can score twice the damage he normally would. This comes in handy with gold fight cards which deal 2 damage per skirmish. With this ability, Hannibal Lecter can bring his opponents down to half their life in a single blow.

That’s delicious!

In my opinion, these are some of the more interesting card types because, in such a hand cycling game such as this one, it provides additional actions that can work in your favor.

To be clear, conditions are cards that you can play to support your hero of villian. They are played during the setup phase and are persistent (meaning that they stay in play unless someone or something removes them). There’s no cost to playing them, but you are limited to playing only 2 in a given turn.

In all cases, condition cards have game text that gives you additional actions you can take. Here are a few examples:

Setup (return this card to hand): Opponent discards 1 card - random selection

or

Score: If opponent scored this fight, either add a green or blue resources, or draw 1 card

This game text is indentical to what’s on your hero or villian cards, as well as your instances. But here’s the beauty: your hero card only provides one persistent action. an instance 1) used only once (unless the game text says different) and 2) can only be used when its in your hand.

My favorite action on a condition card that I’ve seen so far is on Sil’s “New Life” card:

Enhance: You are inhuman +2

This basically gives me the option to enhance my “inhuman” fight value” without needing an effect card. Use this with “Gasoline, Danger” - which allows you to play a second effect card - to gain some nice bonuses.

I’m looking forward to seeing if my initial impressions of the condition cards is accurate. But for right now, they fascinate me.

A first look at the demo decks

I had an opportunity to finally try the demo decks. These can be downloaded from Decipher’s website, under the ‘resources’ tab. It pits Rambo against “Sil” from the Species movies. In order to get into the moment, I also loaded up Netflix and played the movie Species frommy watch instantly queue.

The demo decks include two 21 card decks. 1 hero card, 6 fight cards, 1 drop card, and 13 draw cards.

Hero cardsrepresent the hero or villain your playing. In this case, either Sil or Rambo.

The Drop card show who’s turn it is

Fight cards are what’s used to play out the fight. During the fight phase, you lay down 3 of these and then resolve them in a certain order.

Draw cards are evrything else. They consist of the following:

Gear Cards are weapons and other items that can be used to help your fight.

Conditions are cards that effect you (and presumably your opponent). These cards are played and last until they’re used or taken away.

Instants are cards that can be played during specific phases and immediately affect the situation.

Effects are cards that can be played during the fights that boost your strength across 3 fighting attributes.

The demo deck allows you to play 2 complete rounds pretty well. I played about 5 games and never really was lucky enough to kill my oponent, but I got the gist of the game.

It was clear that each hero had their particular strengths. I could see that these strengths can be supported by creating a properly tuned deck.

Sil’s strategy is a search deck strategy. She burns through a ton of cards and then has a number of effects that allow you to root through your draft or discard pile to find just the card you need. In fact, her special ability is just that: For 1 yellow resource, it allows you to search the draw stack for any instant and put it into your hand. This strategy is also supported by the fact that she draws down to no cards at the end of every turn.

Rambo’s strategy (as best I can tell) is a gear-reliant/raising the stakes strategy. In other words, many of his effects in this demo deck were reliant on Rambo getting his gear out. This compound bow is just ok. it adds 1 or 2 points to his survival attribute. his other strength is nullifying score cards. This can be a pain when trying to put your opponent out of his misery.

I’m looking forward to seeing the full set of cards when they come. Look for more posts at that time.

Again, to download these demo decks for free, go to Decipher’s Homepage. Chev Chelios? Sil? Come on. How did we end up picking b-level characters when so many rich ones could have come to life?

But then I realized it was my fault. I didn’t speak up, I didn’t vote for the cool ones. So I will enjoy the ones picked.

But next time…. yes next time… I will be there to suggest the fun ones. Ones like.

Anton in No Country for Old Men
Celine in Underworld
Captain Jack Sparrow
Morpheus in the Matrix
The Mask, in the Mask
Maximus in Gladiator
Riddick in Pitch Black
